Carrara

In the morning, we ventured up a mountain that look snow covered to discover what looked to be snow, was actually marble! It was amazing how they have cut away the stone for centuries and how they transported it down the mountain. We met Walter, a very hard working man that has spent his life on the mountain moving marble. He was super animated and very proud of his work. It’s so amazing how they moved marble by hand. He had a cute little gift store, where I purchased a few marble wine stoppers for friends back home and a small marble cat. Carrara marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome to construct the Pantheon, Trajan’s Column, and Michelangelo‘s David.

What an amazing journey. We had a 14-day adventure traveling around Italy capturing images with an amazing group of photographers with the lead of Kenny Kim and the one and only, Massimiliano Brunelli, our fearless tour guide. Together we explored the hidden corners of the world, sampled exquisite wines, delicious foods and learned about the true Italian Way of Life!

Day 1 – March 12th/13th

We arrived in Italy… Planes, trains and automobiles!

Appleton to Detroit, to Paris, to Rome, then the train to Florence. Whew, what a day!

A few things learned today:

- pulling the long unmarked cord in the bathroom is an alarm. Think “help, I can’t get up” commercial)

-  your room key, a card, needs to be kept in the inside of your door to turn on the electricity in the room. Italy is extremely eco-friendly, which is awesome!

Ordering the house wine at a local restraunt in a ½ liter is super delicious! Alex had a delicious pizza and I had Spaghetti alle vongole. Delicious!

No downpour could keep Alex and I from finding a resting place at Hotel Embassy in Florence. We couldn’t wait to start our photoventure!

Day 2 – March 14th

The Leaning Tower of Pisa really does lean!

Why does the tower lean?

The tower’s problem is that you can’t stack that much heavy marble on top of a shifting subsoil foundation and keep it all on the up and up. Pisa is also famous for Galileo Galilei’s proved his theory that gravity exerts the same force on two falling objects no matter what their relative weights.

We then headed to Lucca. Lucca is an ancient city surrounded by a 115-foot brick wall constructed during the Middle Ages to protect the city.
